Sample contamination in the laboratories or during sample handling in the eld is always an important issue. Developments since the late nineties in chemical measurement technology have made it possible to equip numerous stations with instruments capable of characterising the aerosols chemically with reasonable time resolution for process studies. The sensitivity of the instruments has also increased, allowing for lower detection limits, higher time resolution and better particle size segregation. The latest instrumentation, such as the aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS [9]) or aerosol time-of- ight mass spectrometer (ATOFMS [10]), is capable of online analysis of chemical components of ne particles in situ in real time, with resolutions of a few
